  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3/4 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 cup plain unsweetened yogurt
  • Small dog treats for garnishing

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour a 6-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and cinnamon.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat the peanut butter, pumpkin puree, applesauce, eggs, and honey until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  9. Garnish the top of the cake with small dog treats.

Notes

  • Peanut Butter: Use creamy, unsweetened peanut butter that does not contain xylitol, as this ingredient is toxic to dogs. Always check the label before using.
  • Pumpkin Puree: Ensure you use plain pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugars and spices that can be harmful to dogs.
  • Flour Alternatives: If your dog has a wheat allergy, you can substitute whole wheat flour with oat flour or rice flour.
  • Yogurt Frosting: Stick with plain, unsweetened yogurt. You can mix in a bit of natural peanut butter for added flavor.
  • Honey: While honey is safe for most dogs in small amounts, avoid using it if your dog has diabetes or weight issues. Always consult with your veterinarian if you’re unsure.
  • Cinnamon: Ensure the cinnamon used is Ceylon cinnamon, which is safer for dogs compared to Cassia cinnamon.
  • Storage: Keep leftover cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. For longer storage, freeze individual slices in freezer-safe bags for up to three months.
  • Serving Size: This recipe makes one 6-inch cake, which can be cut into approximately 8-10 servings, depending on your dog’s size and dietary needs. Adjust portion sizes accordingly to prevent overfeeding.
  • Additional Ingredients: Feel free to add dog-safe ingredients like grated carrots or mashed bananas for added flavor and nutrition.
  • Reheating: If you freeze the cake, let the slices thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Warm the cake slightly by microwaving for 10-15 seconds, ensuring it's not too hot before serving.
Enjoy baking this special treat for your furry friend, and always consult with your veterinarian before introducing new foods into your dog's diet!
