The importance of whole grains in the diet is something I have been preaching for years. I am glad to see that food manufacturer’s are finally starting to realize how vital whole grains are to overall health. I love that whole grain foods are getting easier and easier to find in the grocery store.
Current Dietary Guidelines suggest that you choose foods that have whole grains listed first in the ingredients list. The ingredients are listed in descending order. So if you choose something that has a whole grain listed first, it means there is more of that in the food than any other ingredient. Not everyone has time to read the ingredients of each item they buy though, especially if you are navigating the grocery store with kids. Fortunately for us, General Mills makes it easy to tell at a glance which of their cereals have whole grains as the first and most prevalent ingredient. Just look for the white check at the top of the box.
The current US Dietary Guidelines recommend that we get 48 grams of whole grains in our diets daily. The less refined your grains are the better. For example – choose brown rice instead of white or whole grain bread instead of white. General Mills cereals with the white check can be a great way to get some of those whole grains in at the start of your day. Cereals with the white check will list the amount of whole grains, so you can keep track. These cereals include Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Honey Nut Cheerios, and Total.
To help with choosing products with whole grain, General Mills has developed “Fast Lane for Whole Grain,” an online educational game. Consumers can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check.
