Free Family Fun: Visiting the Laura Ingalls Wilder Birthplace
We recently returned home from spending Christmas with my husband’s parents in Wisconsin. Our big plan for the week was to visit the Mall of America (more on that later) so I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on other activities. We had a pretty small budget for this vacation, so I spent the past few months searching for free family activities in Wisconsin. About an hour away from my in-laws is the Laura Ingalls Wilder birthplace. Since I loved reading the Little House on the Prairie books as a child (and the Bookworm is currently reading them) I put that on my list to do if the weather cooperated.
Beavercreek Ohio 9-11 Memorial
Beavercreek has a new 9-11 memorial dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The pentagon-shaped memorial features a piece of the wreckage of the World Trade Center and has a sign with the names of all the victims. When the first plane hit, I was working on getting some eBay auctions ready to be mailed and had the tv on in the background. Needless to say, I didn’t get much work done that day as I sat glued to the tv, watching in horror. America was changed forever that day. The Beavercreek Ohio 9-11 Memorial is located at Beavercreek Station (a bike path hub) on North Fairfield Rd. just south of Dayton-Xenia Rd. There is parking available at Beavercreek Station. … Continue reading

Free Things to Do in Ohio – Hiking to the Moonville Tunnel
Hiking on one of Ohio’s many great trails is our summer pastime of choice. It’s free, a great form of exercise, and has taken our family to so many amazing places that we never knew existed. Last week we had the chance to visit the Moonville Tunnel near Zaleski, Ohio. We first learned about the Moonville Tunnel in the book and I knew I wanted to visit there sometime. I love hiking to places like this, as it makes history come alive. Before our trip, we enjoyed learning about the tunnel and the town that used to be there. Moonville Tunnel history The Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad developed the Moonville Station and Tunnel on land donated by Samuel Coe around 1856. The small mining town of Moonville grew up around the railroad. At it’s height, Moonville had about 100 residents living within a couple of miles of the tunnel. Moonville consisted … Continue reading
