One of my biggest parenting struggles involves making sure my kids are eating healthy snacks. I am a work at home mom, so I don’t have hours and hours to spend in the kitchen making everything from scratch. Yet most commercial snack foods are so full of additives and undesirable ingredients that I don’t feel comfortable giving them to my kids. Every once in awhile though, I come across a great option and just have to share. Let me introduce you to healthy snacks from Van’s Natural Foods.
I have been a long time fan of Van’s frozen waffles, so I was excited to get to try some of their new snack offerings. Our family was sent their new PB & J Sandwich Bars and Multigrain Chips. We were able to try both the Strawberry Peanut Butter and Blueberry Peanut Butter varieties of the snack bars. The multigrain chips are available in Barbeque and Nacho Cheese varieties and we got to try both of those as well.
Let’s start with the snack bars…
- are gluten-free
- contain 10 grams of whole grains in each bar
- are made with real peanut butter
- contain no artificial colors or flavors
- contain no preservatives
- contain no high fructose corn syrup
- contain no hydrogenated or GMO oil
When I was reading the ingredient list, I was pleased to discover pronounceable and easily recognizable ingredients. I love that there aren’t any weird ingredients or fillers in these snacks!
The peanut butter and jelly taste of these made them a huge hit with my kids. As for myself, I have to admit I wasn’t so sure about the Peanut Butter and Blueberry variety, but I ended up loving the taste combination. The bars were perfectly moist, not crumbly or messy like other snack bars I have tried. The fruit filling provided just the right amount of sweetness. I am definitely going to be buying these for the kids’ after-school snacks. We will also be taking these along when we go hiking on the weekends once the weather warms.
Another item I struggle with giving my kids is chips. They are constantly asking for unhealthy potato chips or flavored tortilla chips. But have you ever read the ingredient list on some of those packages? It is a real eye-opener! So I was happy to give the kids the Van’s multigrain chips to try.
- are gluten-free
- contain no corn
- contain no trans fats or GMO oil
- are kosher
- contain 18 grams of whole grains per serving (brown rice, oats, millet, quinoa, and amaranth)
- contain no artificial flavors or colors
Van’s multi-grain chips are wonderfully light and crispy, but they are sturdy enough to stand up to dipping. They are currently available in two flavors: Mighty good BBQ and Nacho, Nacho, Man. The nacho flavor was the favorite of mine, and the kids loved it as well. You know how some nacho chips leave a powdery residue all over your hands? We didn’t have that problem with the Van’s nacho chips, but they still had a great nacho flavor.
My husband, who has always loved BBQ chips, immediately claimed that bag as his own. I thought both varieties were really flavorful and I would happily buy them for my kids’ lunches. If I could make one suggestion though – I hope that in the future Van’s comes out with a plain variety of these multi-grain chips. These chips would be great with my homemade roasted red pepper hummus!
If you are dealing with gluten intolerance or celiac disease, you will be happy to learn that all 4 of these healthy snack options from Van’s are gluten free. More and more people are discovering that they have trouble tolerating gluten, so it is nice to know that more companies are starting to offer healthier options for people who need to cut this out of their diets.
All in all, we were quite pleased with the Van’s snacks we were sent to try. I love that their snacks taste great, but don’t contain all those yucky fillers like high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oils. I definitely don’t have to feel guilty about serving these to my kids and will be watching for them at my local grocery store.
