Free Things To Do Over Spring Break

My kids are on spring break this week and already they are complaining about being bored.  We are taking a big vacation later this year, so that doesn’t leave a lot of extra money for splurging on activities to keep them occupied this week while they are off from school.  Fortunately, I have a great list of free things to do over spring break to help keep them busy.  Each day, my kids take turns picking an activity off the list.

  • Go on a picnic.
  • Have a tea party.
  • Fly a kite
  • Stay in your pajamas all day and watch movies.
  • Bake chocolate chip cookies and surprise your neighbors with a plate of home-baked cookies.  (Of course make enough so you can have some yourself.)
  • Camp out in your backyard overnight.
  • Go geocaching or letterboxing.  Chances are there are some hidden right in your hometown.
  • Go on a long bike ride.
  • Explore a nearby state park.
  • Play board games.
  • Check out the free activities at your local library.
  • Look through your family photo albums and watch home videos.
  • Check to see if any of your local museums are having free family admission days.
  • Drag out the telescope and go stargazing.
  • Make homemade ice cream.
  • Have a craft party.  Set out a bunch of misc. craft supplies, glue, yarn, and scissors and see what your kids create.
  • Blow bubbles.
  • Use sheets draped off furniture to create a fort in your living room.
  • Play Frisbee.
  • Work a puzzle together.
  • Attend children’s events at local stores.  For example local book stores may have a free storytime and local home improvement stores often offer free kids workshops.
  • Play Capture the Flag.
  • Put on some catchy music and have a dance party in your living room.
  • Help your kids plant a small flower or vegetable garden.

So tell me…. What are you up to this week? Do you have any ideas for free things to do over spring break to add to the list?
